Networks are the backbone of IT infrastructure, enabling devices to communicate and share resources. The main types of networks—LAN, WAN, MAN, and PAN—differ in size, scope, and purpose. Understanding these networks is essential for IT professionals and businesses.

1. Local Area Network (LAN)

A LAN connects devices within a small area, such as an office, school, or home. It allows high-speed communication and resource sharing among devices.

Key Features:

  • Covers a small geographical area
  • High data transfer speed
  • Often uses Ethernet or Wi-Fi connections
  • Supports file sharing, printers, and local applications

Example: Office computers connected to the same network for file sharing and printers.

2. Wide Area Network (WAN)

A WAN connects multiple LANs across large distances, such as cities or countries. The Internet is the largest example of a WAN.

Key Features:

  • Covers large geographical areas
  • Connects multiple LANs or MANs
  • Lower data transfer speed compared to LAN
  • Often uses leased lines, satellite links, or VPNs

Example: A multinational company connecting offices in different countries.

3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

A MAN spans a city or a large campus. It is larger than LAN but smaller than WAN and is ideal for connecting multiple LANs in the same region.

Key Features:

  • Covers a city or large campus
  • Moderate data transfer speed
  • Often used by government, universities, or corporations
  • Can use fiber optic cables for high-speed communication

Example: A city-wide network connecting government offices.

4. Personal Area Network (PAN)

A PAN is the smallest network, used to connect personal devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops within close proximity.

Key Features:

  • Covers a very small area (typically within a few meters)
  • Uses Bluetooth, USB, or Wi-Fi
  • Ideal for personal device connectivity
  • Low cost and simple setup

Example: Connecting your phone to a wireless headset or smartwatch.
